Cornus officinalis, also known as dogwood, taro meat, mountain Yu meat, date skin, etc., deciduous shrub or small tree, 4-10 m tall; bark gray-brown; branchlets finely terete, glabrous or sparsely adnate pubescent winter buds terminal and axillary, ovate to lanceolate, yellow-brown pubescent. Flowers yellow, drupe long ellipsoid, 1.2-1.7 cm long, 5-7 mm in diameter, red to purplish red; drupe bony, narrowly long ellipsoid, ca. 12 mm long, with a few untidy ribs. March-April; fruit September-October. The ripe fruits are used in traditional Chinese medicine for dizziness and tinnitus, soreness of the waist and knees, impotence and spermatorrhea, urine and urine loss, defecation and deficiency, and profuse sweating.
The fruit contains Cornin (Verbe-nalin), saponins, tannins, Ursolic acid, gallic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid and vitamin A. The fatty oil of the seeds contains palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. The fruits contain morroniside, 7-O-methyl morroniside, sweroside and loganin. In addition, it contains ursolic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, gallic acid, vitamin A and about 13% of saponins. Recently, the bicyclic enol ether glycoside compound Cornuside has been isolated. The kernel contains β-sitosterol, betulinic acid, ursolic acid, methyl gallate, gallic acid, etc. The seeds contain oleanolic acid and ursolic acid.
